Misriyati has been operating for 10 years now! Over the years, the project faced challenges, created success stories, and developed substantially both in terms of resources and experience. Today, we claim to deliver quality workshops supported by our ability to build trust and create safe spaces, in a unique values oriented approach. We address issues that are much needed in our society today, and yet are hardly covered by other organizations.
our story
Misriyati was inspired in early 2004 by discussions about the fish and shark car stickers' phenomenon in Cairo. The phenomenon illustrated the growing intolerance among the different components of the Egyptian society: religions, social classes and cultural groups, which manifested in the increasing incidents of religious tension, growing sectarian isolation, and the difficult communication between the different socio-economic classes and subcultures. All these symptoms revealed the need to work on gaining a new awareness of our reality with its structures and relationships, of improving our competences and skills in dealing with diversity or in meeting conflict, and our re-adoption of values that can enhance peaceful living.
The encompassing framework of Misriyati’s work is the global movement for a Culture of Peace, initiated by UNESCO at the end of the 20th century and strongly supported by the civil society worldwide. Also the works of J. Galtung in the field of peace studies, Marshall Rosenberg on nonviolent communication, and that of numerous authors who have researched and disseminated knowledge about “diversity”, “conflict resolution, and “non-violence provide a strong theoretical background to Misriyati curriculum.
